Operational Environmental Services – Active Range

Cayuse manages operations at one of the nation’s busiest U.S. Air Force training ranges, skillfully and cost-effectively providing highly-varied and consistently high-quality services. Work includes, but is not limited to, scheduling sorties; UXO characterization/removal; target maintenance and construction; hazardous materials management; heavy equipment operation, repair, and maintenance; electronics repair and maintenance; road and grounds maintenance; and other duties. Cayuse also administers the facility expense budget, ensuring required supplies and services are in place to enable seamless range operation. Since 2012, Cayuse has staffed this 14,000+ acre site supporting training missions to sharpen the skills of U.S. and allied military aviators and supporting service members with real-world target replication.

UXO Demolition

Cayuse provided Hawaii-licensed explosives blaster staff to manage and document demolition of Materials Presenting Potential Explosive Hazard (MPPEH) recovered from the Waipio Peninsula Confined Disposal Facility. As a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms explosives license holder, Cayuse procured and supplied donor explosives required to conduct the demolition operations. We performed 18 demolition events over the span of 18 months, disposing of over 1,260 pounds of explosive material without incident.

Municipal Drinking Water PFAS Treatment System

Cayuse completed a CERCLA (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act) Non-Time-Critical Removal Action (NTCRA) addressing contaminated municipal drinking water for the city of Fountain, Colorado. Our team designed and constructed a system for integration with Fountain’s existing municipal water treatment infrastructure. Our treatment system treats water contaminated with perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) including perflurooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanioic acid (PFOA) and met the applicable U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Health Advisory Level of 70 parts per trillion at a rate of 1500 gallons per minute.

CERCLA RI/FS – Former Waikoloa Maneuver Area (FWMA) Area E

Cayuse conducted a Remedial Investigation / Feasibility Study (RI/FS) to characterize the nature and extent of Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) and Munitions Constituent (MC) contamination at the 3,993.8-acre FWMA Area E. Cayuse also developed the associated Proposed Plan and Decision Document documents in compliance with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Department of Defense, Department of the Army, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regulations and guidance.

Environmental Compliance Sampling

Cayuse performs quarterly underground injection control well compliance sampling at a remote Hawai’i island location requiring management of tight timelines for sample collection and shipping. We coordinate with local staff to efficiently perform sampling, meet short holding times and generate detailed reports documenting the field activities.

Community Relations Support

Cayuse managed and coordinated U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Restoration Advisory Board meetings, providing an opportunity for the community and stakeholders to be involved in the Waikoloa Maneuver Area environmental restoration process. These semi-annual meetings were conducted in physical, virtual and hybrid formats with Cayuse performing all aspects of meeting coordination. Our activities included everything from creation and update of comprehensive planning checklists, facilitating creation of presentation slide decks, arranging venues and audio-visual services, to publicizing meetings and producing hard copy documentation.

Former Army Bazooka Range Munitions Removal Action

Cayuse provided all services necessary to remove Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) and Material Potentially Presenting an Explosive Hazard (MPPEH) from the Pohakuloa Training Area Former Bazooka Range on the Island of Hawai’i. We performed a surface clearance for just over 60 acres of military range land situated on unstable volcanic rock, coordinating the activities of multiple specialty subcontractors. The Cayuse team provided onsite demolition of Material Documented as an Explosive Hazard and removed 26 tons of Material Documented as Safe from the project area for recycling. To meet our client’s expedited schedule, Cayuse completed this work in 35 days from notice-to-proceed to demobilization with zero safety incidents.
